How Business Owners Sabotage Their Success (And How to Fix It): With Kelly Resendez, EVP of Growth at GoodLeap and Co-Owner of GoBundance Women
By Joe Crisara, America’s Service Sales Coach
If you’re a service business owner who feels like you’re working harder than ever but still not getting the results you want this message is for you.
Running a business should not feel like a constant uphill battle. But for many contractors, entrepreneurs, and sales professionals, burnout, chaos, and stalled growth are all too common.
That’s why I invited Kelly Resendez onto the Service MVP Podcast. Kelly is the Executive Vice President of Growth at GoodLeap, co-owner of GoBundance Women, and one of the most insightful leadership voices in the home service industry today. She brings real experience from growing up in an HVAC family to leading billion-dollar operations.
In this training breakdown, I want to teach you the three biggest ways business owners sabotage their own success, based on my conversation with Kelly. More importantly, I’ll show you exactly how to fix each one.
1. Operating Without a Clear Vision
One of the most common mistakes I see and Kelly confirms this is building a business around numbers instead of purpose.
Many business owners start by chasing income goals. But Kelly teaches something smarter: Start with a vision for how you want to feel, and let that vision shape your goals, strategies, and schedule.
If your business helps you feel fulfilled, focused, and energized, you’re on the right track. But if it’s draining you, then no amount of revenue will solve that.
Instructional Fix:
-Write out your ideal day from start to finish. What would your emotional state be?-Build goals that support that feeling. Revenue is important, but it should not be the first metric you measure.
-Align your business with your life—not the other way around.
-This is a foundational concept in the Pure Motive Sales Process I teach. People buy emotionally and justify logically. The same is true for how you lead yourself. When your emotional state is stable and driven by purpose, performance improves.
2. Trying to Do It All Yourself
Here’s another trap that keeps business owners stuck: thinking they have to do it alone.
Too many of you are acting as CEO, CFO, HR manager, and lead technician all at once. It is unsustainable. And worse—it limits the growth of your business.
Kelly has helped build billion-dollar platforms at GoodLeap. The biggest lesson she brings from that level of success is this: you cannot scale without support.
Instructional Fix:
Create your own “personal board of directors” this might be a business coach, a peer mastermind group, or a seasoned mentor.
Attend leadership seminars or professional development workshops.
You grow faster when you are around others who challenge you.
Use e-learning platforms and training systems to delegate onboarding, sales coaching, and process training for your team.
When you invest in systems and community, you buy back your time.
You also create more consistent outcomes—something that one-person operations can never achieve at scale.
3. Neglecting Personal Well-Being
This may be the most important point of all. If you burn out, the business goes with you.
Kelly shared a powerful story about her mother, who ran their family’s HVAC company. After years of pushing herself without rest or systems, she was diagnosed with dementia at 57. The business collapsed and had to be sold.
That’s a harsh reality and a warning to anyone who’s ignoring their own health and energy in the name of hustle.
Instructional Fix:
Track your weekly energy. Write down what energizes you and what drains you.
-Schedule intentional time for recovery. Include physical health, mental wellness, and personal development.
-Offload repetitive tasks like training by using tools like customer service e-learning systems or video onboarding modules.
-Remember, your business will only grow as fast as you do. Peak performance is not just about strategy. It starts with protecting your energy.
Bonus Training: Kelly’s 4-Step Blueprint for Scalable, Energized Growth
If you want a reliable system for long-term growth without burning out, Kelly laid out a blueprint that mirrors what we teach at Service MVP.
Here it is:
Start With a Vision – Define how you want to feel each day.
Set Actionable Goals – Make sure each goal aligns with your emotional targets and business values.
Build a Business Plan – Document your strategies, delegate tasks, and track key performance indicators.
Audit Your Energy – Use this data to make better decisions about what you do and how you lead.
When you combine this kind of personal clarity with a performance system, you gain momentum in all areas of life.
Final Thoughts From Joe Crisara
Most business owners are climbing the pyramid of success by scrambling up the outside. It’s all grit and effort.
But there’s another way one that is smarter, faster, and far less exhausting.
If you’re using systems like GoodLeap financing, you’ve already taken a step in the right direction. Add in high-level peer groups like GoBundance Women, or structured coaching through Service MVP, and you’ll go from surviving to thriving.
Success doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from becoming more strategic, more energized, and more intentional.
